New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
